I'm still alive, the past few weeks have been extra-extra-extrordinary. More detail when I'm not writing from my phone. Also, DEFCON CFP ends tomorrow. Someone suggest something for me to talk about. I could do botnet and ransomware stuff, or even old school phreaking techniques. (Stuff I can present on without doing more new research.)

As some of you may be aware, I put off white balance adjustment until I do post-processing — quite some time later. It is then, that I get to play the, "Which color was this originally?"-game. Sometimes I actually remember what the color of the light in the room was, but when I tweek the balance for that, the results look terrible. So in those situations I just tweek the knobs until things look good.
There are technical reasons for all of this, mostly with my camera expecting a black-body radiation curve, and getting monochromatic light instead. So, I get an overexposed red channel, and a way-way underexposed blue channel, or vice versa. (Neither of which is actually the original colors. And there are ways to work around this while shooting, but I haven't been doing it because it's labor intensive. (More precisely, I'd have to manually adjust camera settings, every time I change position. I've programmed my camera to do most of what I do automatically now, but this situations is a bit beyond my poor camera's ken.))

EsoZone this weekend in Portland.
http://esozone.com/schedule/
http://www.boingboing.net/2008/10/07/esozone-this-weekend.html

I'm going to try to make it to the Sisters of Mercy concert in SF on Nov 26
http://www.livedaily.com/news/14881.html

I have no idea about this:
http://events.sfgate.com/san-francisco-ca/events/show/84056094-vampire-lesbians-of-sodom-and-sleeping-beauty-or-coma

And there's no parties from any of these people, but I'm just putting these here for reference:
http://symbiosisevents.com/
http://www.acidtotem.net/
http://www.raindancepresents.com/

And also, http://upcoming.yahoo.com/user/14674/

And this has nothing to do with anything else at the moment, but it's also for my own reference:

Let's see, what am I not doing this month… (I was planning on going to Earthdance, but I had an unplanned expenditure of about US$2000, so I can't really afford it this week.) (It's ok, because I really needed some downtime anyway. I'm not even completely unpacked from Burn yet…)

Is anyone organizing a bay-area caravan to DEFCON this year? (I didn't find anything here: https://forum.defcon.org/index.php)

If not, does anyone want to car pool with me on like, Thursday-ish?

I'm kinda, meh on attending DEFCON this year, but I haven't missed once since DEFCON 3.

So, right now I'm missing The Last Hope although there's still enough time for me to jump on a plane and make it. PET is coming up in a few days, and I want to spend time with [livejournal.com profile] enochsmiles, but I could buy a MacBook or Nikon D300 for what plane tickets are now. And time-wise, I'm trying to keep my head above water at work. And I also noticed that if I can stop spending money for three months, I'll have enough saved up for surgery (yes, that operation).

In the meantime, I'm going up to [livejournal.com profile] veedub's tonight, and then to the Infected Mushroom concert at 1015 Folsom [in San Francisco].

Assuming that I don't fly out to Belgium at the last minute, I'm thinking of driving up to this: http://www.thegreenwolf.com/kingather08.html next weekend, for reasons I'll explain later.

Baycon 2008 Here's something more recent for a change. There is also a good example of composition in here. I was a little bit too far away when I saw the light-saber guy, and I couldn't get any closer at the time, so I just shot it from where I was, and I've cropped the photo down in two different ways, so you can see the difference that composition makes. (This is also one of the advantages of having a 12Mpixel camera.) D300, photo, May 2008, Baycon, Sci-FI, convention, Santa Clara, California Julia Wolf Julia Wolf image/jpeg 2008 Read more... )

Anthrocon 2006 I think that this marks one of the turning points of my photographic style. This is where I felt like I was starting to get acceptably good at this type of photography. br As usual, these are just random, impromptu people and things I saw that looked cool. This time the NEFs have been processed with Adobe Lightroom, and tweeked in my usual ways. (Back in 2006 I was still using Apple's Aperture) (I was also still using a Nikon D50, with a f/1.8 lens.) I've already posted these before (two years ago), so I don't have to think very hard about which ones to post now. I'm still not sure if I'm going out to Anthrocon 2008 next week.

Hey everyone, guess where I'm NOT! If you said Berlin you would be correct. I'm now exactly one year behind on photo processing/publishing.

Of course, if you had said anything other than: In my clothes, on a chair, in my room, in my house, in Mountain View, in California, in the USA, in the Pacific Timezone, in the Northern Hemisphere, on Earth, in the Solar System, in the Milky Way Galaxy, in the Universe, in the Third Dimension… Then you'd be wrong.

I'm presenting research at ISOI4 and possibly at ETech. The CFP for Black Hat Europe closed early because they got too many submissions, but my employer is probably going to send me anyway. Unfortunately CanSecWest is at the same time. I already have an invite from FX for ph-neutral (it's on an island this year). I have three days to get something in for DIMVA, but I really don't have enough research done for a full paper.

CodeCon is not happening any time soon this year, I don't know if REcon is happening this year or not, and ditto with Security Opus.

This list is by no means exhaustive. If there is some place you expect me to be that is not on here, it's just because I have decided to go to bed rather than write any more.
