I've been meaning to write something here for a while, but you know, life keeps on happening. I was going to announce that I'm going to Sweden, but now I've left Sweden. I was there speaking at Sec-T, got interviewed by the press, and was randomly invited to a rave out in the middle of the woods — but still within public transit access, since this is Sweden after all. (It was basically just like the renegade parties in the bay area if you were wondering.) So, then I took a train from Stockholm to Malmö and crashed with my old friend [livejournal.com profile] atavist. We took the bus to Copenhagen (yes, over the sea) and I hopped onto a night train to Leuven, by way of Köln and Liège-Guillemins. On this trip, I've encountered quite a few people who didn't speak English. Switching rapidly between English, Swedish, German, French, and Dutch/Flemish has got me so that I'm totally saying the wrong words whenever I try to speak to someone. (I mean like mixing words and syntax from three languages in the same sentence.)

Friday I presented a seminar at COSIC, and spent most of the day there talking to people. (More news later…) And Saturday I got my breakfast, and lunch at the farmer's market here in Leuven. Then explored the city for a while. (The Fonske statue is missing from the Fochplein!) And I'm about to head to Brussels tomorrow to catch a flight back to Arlanda via Riga - to catch my return flight to the US. I'll be wandering around in the streets of Brussels tomorrow afternoon — it's a no-car-day tomorrow. (Speaking of which, I have not been inside a car since I left California.)

Oh, and I'm also going to be speaking at SecTor in Toronto next month.

I have one day left in Belgium, before I return to the states. What should I do with it? I've already stomped all over Brussels and Leuven. I suppose I could go over to Gent, or Antwerp, or even visit Paris, FR or Amsterdam, NL. I'm tempted to just buy a ticket, and randomly jump on whatever train leaves next, and jump off wherever it looks interesting. (And I've consumed all the standard things one consumes in Belgium: Frits, Waffles, Chocolate, etc. I wanted to do something that does not have anything to any form of consumption.)

I'm back in Leuven, BE, after spending the night in Maastricht, NL after the Deutsche Bahn train we were on was late by half an hour, causing us to miss all of the rest of our connections to Leuven. (And all of the trains stop running at midnight.) My original plan was to be heading to Belgium right now to catch my plane back to the US in two hours, but I've moved my reservation to another flight, and extended my stay here.

The Dutch know how to build some beautiful cities. Also, it's snowed like two inches (5cm) here this morning, and it's still coming down.

I'm currently typing this post while traveling at 300km/hour! (I'm on a Thalys train.) As an aside, all of the trains here in Europe are spooky-quiet. Like more quiet than my hybrid car. I'm used to BART and Caltrain, which are so loud you can't hold a conversation with the person next to you. Here, I can hear people whispering at the other end of this car.

Does anyone know of a book or website which tells you about all of the little cultural differences you never notice while you're immersed in your own culture. I mean, like a guide for: If you travel to <foo>, these are the tiny differences you'll encounter in your daily life. (Most guides just have the big things).

Like for example, in Belgium, in the supermarket, you're expected to bag your own groceries. And (sometimes) the bags cost 0.10€ each. For context, if you're unfamiliar with the US system: In the US, employees of the grocery store bag your items for you. So if you don't know this when you visit Belgium, you stand around in the check out line, while everyone looks at you funny.

I'm sitting at a cafe in Oude Markt, Leuven with [livejournal.com profile] maradydd; We're going over to Enschede, NL tonight for a conference. I still haven't gotten my [Cingular] cell phone situation sorted out, so I just got a new phone in Amsterdam. The number, if you need to reach me, is +31 618968301. However, if you call just this second, you won't get me, because I left the phone over in [livejournal.com profile] enochsmiles's apartment. I only have about €10 left on the SIM too, so forgive me in advance if I don't want to talk for too long. I should be in Berlin for PH-Neutral by Friday.

I have some interesting comments to make about Marijuana usage, but I don't have time to write them now…
