I shot a bunch of panoramas this year at Burning Man, but not as many as I had wanted to shoot. (Like I didn't manage to get any at night.) Anyway, [stories go here], I need to get some sleep right now. I've got some regular portrait stuff, almost ready to post, but I'm probably not going to have enough time to post it until next week.

I haven't done any post processing on these panoramas here, it's literally just the .jpgs which came out of the camera, thrown into PTGui. These are the middle exposures of an HDR set. Also, the tower kept shaking because of all the people running up and down the stairs; So there's a little bit of motion blur in some parts of these. I probably should have shot everything at a faster shutter, but anyway, need to sleep now.

These were shot from the top of an eleven story tall skyscraper that some crazy people built, way out in the middle of nowhere, on a lake bed, in the desert. (It had steel I-beams, it was a real building, constructed in four days.@.@)

These were my instructions:

Hey Julia;

I just wanted to let you know that we have space for black-and-white photographic of art of people in movement or engaged in spiritual activity at some point or dancing.. etc.

If you would like to show your work on the playa, we just need it printed in canvas with grommet at the corners. You do great art so it would be awesome to include it in the temple this year.
> I'll have to see what I have. I know I have some stuff like that from
> other (non-BM) events. It's all in color, but I can make it B/W. And I
> know someone who can print onto canvas.
Cool. :) Anything ritually, mystical activity like, or dance/movement like. :)

larger sized prints best. :)
[...]
even numbers of them would be good..and largish! 3x3 or greater. Yay! it wll be great to have some of your beautiful photographs up there. :)

So this is what I came up with:

Pantheogenesis
2206
Pantheogenesis
7516
Pantheogenesis
6742
Pantheogenesis
7098
Pantheogenesis
7687
Pantheogenesis
5876
Pantheogenesis
4431
Pantheogenesis
9469

I compose everything for the typical 3x4 aspect ratio, so when cropping down to a square I'd have to make some hard decisions, and some photos just did not work right after cropping. (There was no way to recompose them well.) There are also several different ways to crop a photo, and each of them is a unique photo by itself. The small changes in size and position of subject matter within the frame will change the mood dramatically.
There were a lot of other photos I was considering, and working on. But I'm out of time. Here are some examples. [For the record, not all of them.]

Most of these photos I shot while riding my bike, one-handed, over sand, while intoxicated.

More photos and stuff. Normally I write something relevant to the subject matter in these little blocks of text here, but I can't think of anything to say right now. Unfortunately I can only write brialliant LJ posts in my head while doing other things, like driving. The moment I sit down to write something I forget it all.

ZMOG, I can't believe I'm not in bed yet. Here's some more photos; I'm calling it a night. The way my schedule is looking it may be a while before I have time to post any more.

After leaving the playa, For some reason I was thinking that I hadn't taken many good pictures at all this year. I wasn't really paying very close attention to photography at all this year.

The Man Explodes
Many people look at my photos and go: Oooh! You must have a really good camera. And then I have to give my lecture about how it's not the camera, but the photographer that's responsible for the picture; And that a good photographer can take really good looking photos with anything.

The photo on the left here is one of the very few of mine where the camera actually made the difference. This is from a sequence of twelve frames, taken about 1/20s apart (I should make an animated .GIF of the fireball). I made some 1280x1024 crops of this frame, if you would like to use it as a desktop background or something.

So anyway, what did I do at Burning Man? What didn't I do? Quite a lot actually…
  • I didn't take pictures of anything silhouetted by the full-moon.
  • I didn't climb anything.
  • I didn't attend Paul Oakenfold.
  • I didn't see Crude Awakenings.
  • I didn't ride any art cars.
  • I didn't make it to Spike's.
  • I didn't go to any parties.
  • I didn't get drunk.
  • I didn't get set on fire.
In a way, I guess you could say that my experience has been rather limited…

I did get a lot of deep introspection done. My head is still processing everything.

Burning Man 2007 Burning Man 2007

So, I have full net access from the playa; I'm going to try to make daily posts about stuff, possibly just photos — which may stop working on my LJ within the next few days because arclight.net is moving to a new colo.

The weather is rather cool this year (only in the high 90F's) and it is also very windy. Night is also unexpectedly warm. The surface of the playa is very loose and crumbly this year. It's a little bit difficult to ride a bike over in spots — mostly the sand dunes, of which there are very many this year. We had several white-outs yesterday while setting up the tents.

There is a lunar eclipse tonight. I'm probably going to observe it by doing a mystical woo-woo ritual, and photographing it through my 500mm lens with the man in the frame. I think that the red of the moon will contrast the green man well. (This is a really hard shot to get right too, it has at least 9ev of dynamic range between the moon and the illuminated tent below the man)
