Burning Man
Aug. 31st, 2009 10:41 amSo, I'm not going to Burning Man this year. I'm sinking all of my time and money into traveling to Belgium soon. I mean I could possibly make it to BRC for the weekend, but I can't really justify dropping a big pile of money on it right now. (Unless someone has a spare ticket they can give me.) (Also, I don't really want to go without Nyah, which would require me to get two tickets.) (And I'm sure it's going to be the best year ever, and I'm feeling homesick now, sigh.)
I'm thinking of going to Balsa Man on Saturday, September 5th, if I'm not at Black Rock City.

Burning Man 2008 [Part 1]
Oct. 8th, 2008 11:11 amThere were many photos I had planned on making this year — that I didn't. All of the photos here were completely spontaneous and unplanned.

Early Panoramas of Black Rock City
Oct. 2nd, 2008 02:02 amI shot a bunch of panoramas this year at Burning Man, but not as many as I had wanted to shoot. (Like I didn't manage to get any at night.) Anyway, [stories go here], I need to get some sleep right now. I've got some regular portrait stuff, almost ready to post, but I'm probably not going to have enough time to post it until next week.
I haven't done any post processing on these panoramas here, it's literally just the .jpgs which came out of the camera, thrown into PTGui. These are the middle exposures of an HDR set. Also, the tower kept shaking because of all the people running up and down the stairs; So there's a little bit of motion blur in some parts of these. I probably should have shot everything at a faster shutter, but anyway, need to sleep now.
These were shot from the top of an eleven story tall skyscraper that some crazy people built, way out in the middle of nowhere, on a lake bed, in the desert. (It had steel I-beams, it was a real building, constructed in four days.

Playa Artwork
Aug. 24th, 2008 02:46 pmThese were my instructions:
> other (non-BM) events. It's all in color, but I can make it B/W. And I
> know someone who can print onto canvas.
So this is what I came up with:

2206
7516
6742
7098
7687
5876
4431
9469
I compose everything for the typical 3x4 aspect ratio, so when cropping down to a square I'd have to make some hard decisions, and some photos just did not work right after cropping. (There was no way to recompose them well.) There are also several different ways to crop a photo, and each of them is a unique photo by itself. The small changes in size and position of subject matter within the frame will change the mood dramatically.
There were a lot of other photos I was considering, and working on. But I'm out of time. Here are some examples. [For the record, not all of them.]
( Stuff below the cut )
Hey Julia;> I'll have to see what I have. I know I have some stuff like that from
I just wanted to let you know that we have space for black-and-white photographic of art of people in movement or engaged in spiritual activity at some point or dancing.. etc.
If you would like to show your work on the playa, we just need it printed in canvas with grommet at the corners. You do great art so it would be awesome to include it in the temple this year.

Cool. :) Anything ritually, mystical activity like, or dance/movement like. :)
larger sized prints best. :)
[...]
even numbers of them would be good..and largish! 3x3 or greater. Yay! it wll be great to have some of your beautiful photographs up there. :)

Playa Art Project
Aug. 18th, 2008 11:11 amSo, to make a long story short, I'm doing some art for Burning Man after all. I don't have a lot of time to go through my photos, so if you, the general LJ reading audience, can point me at some of my photos which meet the following requirement:
I can take care of the Black-and-white part, I just have a lot of photos to look though, and not a lot of time.

Travel Plans
Jul. 24th, 2008 10:20 amSo, Aug 1-3, I'm going to be up in Eugene, OR for Faerieworlds 2008, and then next week, from 08/08/08 to Aug 10 I'll be in Las Vegas, NV for DEFCON 16, I think I'm going to skip Black-Hat this year, cause I'm just not getting enough out of it for the price. (The next time I go, I'll probably be presenting my research.)
And then… Aug 25-Sep 1 is Burning Man!
Back in June, a button got pressed somewhere, and I started to obsess over Burning Man; I was having dreams every night about it for several days in a row. This year I plan on taking it easy, and not building anything big, and not camping with a theme camp, and basically not doing any physical labor, or having any great responsibilities. I'm thinking that my contribution to Burning Man this year will be documenting it through photography.
Stuff to bring:
I'm considering rigging up some kind of plastic covers for my cameras (mostly the lenses), so that they don't get completely impregnated with dust. (If you saw my old D200 you know what I mean.) The D300 body is dust and water-proof, but my 50mm f/1.4 lens isn't — It started making crunching noises when autofocusing by about Wednesday of burn. I saw another photographer on the playa a year or two ago, who had their camera inside a plastic shower cap, with rubber bands around the lens and stuff. The only part exposed was the objective surface of the lens. I might do that.

- Food that doesn't require cooking, and 35 Gal. of water
- Fur coats, furry boots, and brightly colored clothes that I'll never be able to use for anything else again.
- Bicycle(s) and parts.
- Camera gear.
- Goggles and dust masks. (Sunscreen, Lip gloss, garbage bags, etc.)
- Bright blinking flashing glowing things.

Shmoocon/Burning Man Tickets
Jan. 16th, 2008 12:45 pmBurning Man tickets go on sale today, I'm currently number 6760 in line. I won't be surprised if they've already sold out the first 10,000. Although I'm not 100% certain that I'm going to Burning Man this year, I'm sure that I can find someone to use the ticket(s).
Shmoocon rejected my talk proposal along with 90 others submitted, yay! This tremendously simplifies my life, since when I submitted the talk, I didn't realize that Shmoocon was at the same time as something else I had committed to doing in San Jose. I was worried that I'd have to fly out to DC, go to the hotel, give my talk, go back to the airport and jump on the first plane back to the bay area, all on one day.
Anyway, as a consolation, Shmoocon is offering me a normal registration for only $75. So, if you want/need a Shmoocon ticket, I can get you one, since I'm preoccupied that weekend and can't make it to DC.

Burning Man: Part 4
Dec. 26th, 2007 01:11 amI thought that I had lost about 600 of these photos in an act of blithering idiocy, but as it turned out I had just misplaced them on an external drive. (It was the fault of those trickster spirits from the eclipse on Monday night!)
Most of these photos I shot while riding my bike, one-handed, over sand, while intoxicated.

Mad Hatter Tea Party (part 2)
Sep. 29th, 2007 02:08 pm
I keep telling myself that I'm going to post, at least a few, photos every day. But most days I never even touch my laptop. It seems to take about six hours for every batch of photos I publish, and I just don't have enough time in a 24 hour day, or weekends. Love parade… or fixing my file server?

More photos and stuff. Normally I write something relevant to the subject matter in these little blocks of text here, but I can't think of anything to say right now. Unfortunately I can only write brialliant LJ posts in my head while doing other things, like driving. The moment I sit down to write something I forget it all.

ZMOG, I can't believe I'm not in bed yet. Here's some more photos; I'm calling it a night. The way my schedule is looking it may be a while before I have time to post any more.
After leaving the playa, For some reason I was thinking that I hadn't taken many good pictures at all this year. I wasn't really paying very close attention to photography at all this year.
