Feb. 14th, 2007 11:22 pmI know it's just a physiological reaction to pain, but I can't stop crying [Ok, I've stopped now as I type this.] I had another face zapping treatment, and for the amount of pain I'm feeling, I can't believe that I'm not covered in blood, or that I wasn't actually set on fire.
It took two hours, because I broke down crying in the middle of the treatment. It was like the Lidocaine was having no effect at all. This was my fourth treatment, and it was the worst of all of them. I re-applied the Lidocaine three times, and I thought that I was numb, until treatment started again. And it felt very much like having several long, deep, hairs liquefy and char, as they explode out from the pores of your skin… every second… for twenty or so seconds. (Followed by the smell of burnt popcorn.) My teeth really hurt now, because I was clenching my jaw so hard.
Now having read up on Wikipedia about the mechanism of Lidocaine,
By the way, does anyone in the SF Bay Area want to go to this: http://www.dnalounge.com/flyers/2007/02/15-meat.html tomorrow?
dymaxion and
artkiver were going, but it seems like the kind of thing that
dv_girl might like to do (hint, hint).
[I wish Nyah was here, but I hope she's having a good time in New Orleans.]

[B]locking the fast sodium (Na+) channels in the cell membrane; I suspect that the reason it had no effect on me this time, was because I've gone back on Piracetam which effects
[N]eurotransmission via modulation of ion channels. So, I guess it's good to see that Piracetam isn't just an expensive Placebo.

Date: 2007-02-15 08:22 am (UTC)I feel your pain, literally. My esthetician was all enthused about showing me her laser machine so i let her do a patch test on me.
It hurt way worse than the bikini wax I'd just had... and it was a squicky burny pain that made me really uncomfortable, to boot.
In addition to a topical, maybe try taking some naproxen or ibuprofen before? Too bad you can't get Tylenol 1 over the counter in the US like we can up in Canadia.

Date: 2007-02-15 01:37 pm (UTC)Just try to spin it around as best as possible. Given it hurts so much means it's working darned well most likely. For me outside of appendicitis there wasn't much more painful than this, rrrrf.

Tell me if you try it, or I'll let you know if I do. Anyways, if it works and can spare you this pain, that sounds like a Good Thing.
On an unrelated note, I think Fox and I will be at Meat. We're going to this first, though. You might also be interested in attending.

Date: 2007-02-15 05:40 pm (UTC)Always been interested in laser hair removal for myself, but alas, it's usually the pain that it would cause on my wallet that keeps me away...

Date: 2007-02-15 05:58 pm (UTC)Actually, it would be fun, but I just brought home a new animal yesterday and I want to watch him for a couple of days and make sure he's adapting to the change alright.
BTW, careful with the topical anesthetics. Did you see this? http://news.google.com/news?q=topical%20anesthetic
Ment to get in contact with you last week. Smash had linked to a Brother Grimm themed party that was last weekend, but I wasn't feeling well so I ended up ditching it.

Date: 2007-02-15 07:47 pm (UTC)I do know someone that found the best form of relief being from smoking pot first. I can't vouch for that myself, but with the pain ... if you're not afraid of illicit substances, it might help.

Date: 2007-02-15 09:15 pm (UTC)I think some people have much deeper hair follicles than others, or closer connections to that little bundle of nerves. My pain threshold is very very high, but plucking my eyebrows is completely out of the question. It's an alarming pain; it triggers a powerful emotional response. Usually anger.
When you think about it, though, one of the hair's primary functions is a sensory extension. No wonder it hurts so much.
Do try a combo of acetaminophen and ibuprofen, before, and ask your doctor about taking a vitamin E supplement. A big dose of vit E taken orally always kicked my sebaceous glands into overdrive, which might help the hair come out with less pain.
Something else: do you need any dental work? If so, you could schedule a visit to the dentist right before, and ask him or her to liberally apply the local. Obviously a topical application isn't doing much.
