I'm currently typing this post while traveling at 300km/hour! (I'm on a Thalys train.) As an aside, all of the trains here in Europe are spooky-quiet. Like more quiet than my hybrid car. I'm used to BART and Caltrain, which are so loud you can't hold a conversation with the person next to you. Here, I can hear people whispering at the other end of this car.

*laugh* really depends on what section of Europe. The further east you travel...the MUCH louder they get! :)

That's just what trains do now, isn't it? They sneak up on you. I was in Mountain View California, staying in an apartment literally across the street from train tracks. All hours of the day and night a train might pass, but I never heard it, could only see it.

The first time I went in to SF I went by Cal Train from Sunnyvale. Since that's the same distance as two cities near to my home city I expected the journal to take the same time. Well the train from Leeds to York takes 25 minutes and the on to Manchester (which is a slow line) takes an hour. I didn't expect the Cal Train to be as slow as it was! Leeds to London is a little over 2 hours and is 200 miles. Its comfortable and there's free wi-fi. I always take the train rather than drive.

You can post from inside the train? On my last trip on BART I was annoyed by how 85% of it (even before SF) seemed to be underground, and therefore lacking in phone signal.

You're in the Bay Area, I take it? Have you been there long?

All my life, aside from living in Sacto from 1997-2000 and in Ontario for 6 months in 2006. Ricochet sounds vaaaguely familiar but in 1994 I was in high school, so not travelling about on trains, and we didn't have "real" internet at my house yet anyway (that was 1995 -- only CompuServe before then, although granted, since I was about 6 years old) so I wouldn't have known the need for it.
