Burning Man

Many people look at my photos and go: Oooh! You must have a really good camera. And then I have to give my lecture about how it's not the camera, but the photographer that's responsible for the picture; And that a good photographer can take really good looking photos with anything.

The photo on the left here is one of the very few of mine where the camera actually made the difference. This is from a sequence of twelve frames, taken about 1/20s apart (I should make an animated .GIF of the fireball). I made some 1280x1024 crops of this frame, if you would like to use it as a desktop background or something.

So anyway, what did I do at Burning Man? What didn't I do? Quite a lot actually…

• I didn't take pictures of anything silhouetted by the full-moon.
• I didn't climb anything.
• I didn't attend Paul Oakenfold.
• I didn't see Crude Awakenings.
• I didn't ride any art cars.
• I didn't make it to Spike's.
• I didn't go to any parties.
• I didn't get drunk.
• I didn't get set on fire.

In a way, I guess you could say that my experience has been rather limited…

I did get a lot of deep introspection done. My head is still processing everything.

I didn't know he was there. There were apparently a few other geeky celebrities there too — none of which I met. (Some billionaires too: Steve Jobs, Sergey Brin, Larry Page) I know Starhawk and a bunch of other famous pagan-types were also there.

I'm sorry I didn't get around to visiting your camp this year, but I'm glad you were still able to swing by our humble little abode! :)

By any chance, did you happen to take any photos of the rig burning? Most of the videos I've seen on YouTube are making it clear that no one was expecting such a big beautiful mushroom of fire, and most wannabe-amateurs with cheap disposable cameras (e.g.: andrea_lambda) had already shot up all of their film on the man burning.

Lovely picture. I'm sorry I missed you there, but was good to see you on Friday. I missed the burn, so doubly enjoy the photo. Also, you can get the Spike's experience most any time, right, so no worries there. (Although I found it a fun place to spend the last hours on the playa...)

I think camera might make a difference at least in terms of being able to set the exposure/flash settings. My Kodak C360 was unable to catch anything but blur for most of the evening shots.
