of course as a good sysadmin i shutdown -r now just to make sure everyone was paying attention. i missed nailing it on the shutdown timestamp by 3 seconds. I FAIL.

Yup, and the Vancouver event was pretty well attended, despite only one days notice, 50+ geeks descended on a pub in time to drink and have a countdown.
