Awesome.

There's a lot of crazy stuff in the cold frozen wastes of the high bits of Unicode. There's even an unofficial codepage for Seuss' On Beyond Zebra glyphs.

First 4 rows aren't available in the font I'm using. What font are you using?

U+26A7 MALE WITH STROKE AND MALE AND FEMALE SIGN has been around since Unicode revision 4.1.0 (March 2005)

Technically that's just part of the low Private Use Area ( U+E000 - U+F8FF ), but yes... it is fun to play with...

If there's anything you can't see, I recommend grabbing the Code 2000 font, it's quite extensive...

yeah same here, and I've got every unicode font, every codepage, that's available in the Debian/Ubuntu repositories installed.

somehow i think MALE WITH STROKE is just too amusing of a symbol name.

i want an international symbol for "whatever" and one for "none of the above" so i can answer almost every question with one character.

Then I really shouldn't point out:

U+26A9 ⚩ HORIZONTAL MALE WITH STROKE SIGN

i want an international symbol for "whatever"

I usually go for U+2603 ☃ SNOWMAN when I want to convey that sentiment...

Ah. Not much use to someone using Win2k then. :-)

What does it all mean?

From: (Anonymous)
According to the Unicode character database:

 = lesbianism

 = male homosexuality

 = bisexuality

 = transgendered sexuality
 = hermaphrodite (in entomology)

 = transgendered sexuality

 = transgendered sexuality

= ferrous iron sulphate (alchemy and older chemistry)

= magnesium (alchemy and older chemistry)

 = asexuality, sexless, genderless
 = engaged, betrothed
 * base for male or female sign
...

...

and our candidate for "whatever":

 * audible lip smack

So, is that "audible lip smack" an inhalation noise or an exhalation noise?

(And thanks for the key!)

Apparently neither. It is an airless minor mechanism ..., by either opening or closing the lips.

So for example: start with your lips pressed closed and then open them suddenly without either inhaling or exhaling, producing a popping sound.

Hmm. Is browsing the Unicode character database on Christmas morning terribly geeky, do you think? Or just geeky enough? :-)
