Good:

Obama was elected President. I feel as though a crushing weight has been lifted from my soul.

Bad:

Prop 8 passed. I'm not constantly agonizing about this anymore. And I don't feel like I'm going to hit anyone with blunt objects now because of it.

Good:

MTV is putting all of their videos up online, so you can watch them any time you like.
OMGOMG! You have no idea how happy this makes me! I feared that I may never see these videos again.
These videos are the foundation of my musical taste. This is what I used to listen to back in high school. (This is what Alternative music was before Grunge.) MTV would only play stuff like this for about two hours from 1am to 3am on Sunday nights.

Now bare [bear?] witness to the depths of my soul:

Siouxsie and the Banshees - Cities In The Dust
Siouxsie and the Banshees - Spellbound
The Sisters Of Mercy - This Corrosion
The Sisters Of Mercy - Lucretia My Reflection
The Sisters of Mercy - Dominion (I much prefer these mixes to the versions on Floodland, also in high school, people though I was weird because I had a thing for Patricia Morrison.)

Recoil - Faith Healer
The Heart Throbs - Dreamtime
New Order - Fine Time
New Order - True Faith
The Cure - Just Like Heaven
The Cure - Fascination Street
Cranes - Tomorrow's Tears
Echo & The Bunnymen - The Killing Moon
This Picture - Naked Rain
Ministry - Stigmata
Ministry - Just One Fix
Hunters & Collectors - When The River Runs Dry
The Cure - A Night Like This
Pop Will Eat Itself - XY&Z
Echo & The Bunnymen - Lips Like Sugar
The Smiths - How Soon Is Now
Peter Murphy - Cuts You Up
Peter Murphy - All Night Long
The Church - Under The Milky Way
Depeche Mode - People Are People
The Sisters of Mercy - More
Fury In The Slaughterhouse - Every Generation Got Its Own Disease
Peter Gabriel - Shock the Monkey
Bad Religion - American Jesus (dup!)
Bad Religion - 21st Century (Digital Boy) (dup!)
Public Image Limited - Rise
The Ocean Blue - Drifting And Falling
The Ocean Blue - Between Something and Nothing
Suzanne Vega - Left of Center
They Might Be Giants - Birdhouse In Your Soul
Lush - Nothing Natural
The Smiths - Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before
The Charlatans UK - Weirdo 2
Buffalo Tom - Taillights Fade
Love and Rockets - So Alive
Inspiral Carpets - This Is How It Feels
The Pixies - Monkey Gone to Heaven
The Pixies - Dig for Fire
The Judybats - Is Anything
The Judybats - Don't Drop the Baby
The Judybats - Native Son
Peter Schilling - Major Tom
Peter Schilling - The Different Story (I'd never actually seen this one before, only heard it.)
Bad Religion - Struck A Nerve (Never saw this one before either; Had the album.)

(Some of the videos have tape glitches, but they do go out all the way to the very end of the video. I remember when these originally aired, the last few seconds of the video was frequently cut off. On one you can see character generated tape info text stuff for a few frames at the end. (I haven't been able to read what it says, but I'm sure it's probably something like tape number, and place commercial here sort of text.))

MTV doesn't have everything up yet, I know there are more videos from these artists:

Love and Rockets (No New Tale To Tell?)
The Beautiful South (My Book?)
EMF (Lies?)
Smashing Pumpkins (Siva?)
The Pixies (Alec Eiffel,Here Comes Your Man?)
Kate Bush (Everything?!)
Dead Can Dance
Information Society
Laibach
My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult
Aphex Twin
Public Image Ltd.
Suzanne Vega
They Might Be Giants
Catherine Wheel
Blur
Cocteau Twins
Aztec Camera
Morrissey
Lloyd Cole

I don't know what happened, but a few days ago there were a ton of videos by Siouxsie and the Banshees and now they're all gone! Sad now… Ok, I found the link again in my Browser History, (see above).

That's weird, some of the This Picture videos have also disappeared from the index/search engine. From my browser history:
This Picture - The Great Tree
This Picture - Naked Rain (Live, from 120mins)
This Picture - Step Up (Live, from 120mins)

These artists have nothing at all yet:
The Waterboys
Tribe
Kitchens of Distinction
Man With No Name
Astral Projection
Orbital
Nitzer Ebb
Emergency Broadcast Network
Front 242
Skinny Puppy
Frontline Assembly
KMFDM
Concrete Blonde
Pylon
Sister Machine Gun
The The
Mojo Nixon
A Man Called E
Psychedelic Furs
Ned's Atomic Dustbin
Curve
Delerium

I'm totally with you in that being the best thing I can say right now re: Prop 8.

You're a bit ahead of me w.r.t. Prop 8 (and Prop whatever in Florida, and Prop whatever in Arizona - which had been the only state where we'd won one of these - and Prop whatever in Arkansas.

I have a bunch of InSoc videos from way back when (#insoc on irc.insoc.org) that I can burn to disc for you, if you like. I'm also working on converting my copy of Shot v2.0 (a Sisters of Mercy video compilation) to digital format, if you're interested.

Prop 8 = defense of marriage???? The fact that these fucktards want to annul existing legal marriages and actually prevent marriage from taking place only proves they are hypocrites. This isn't about defense of marriage, but legislating homophobic hatred into law.

More civilized nations would never let the public vote to take away other citizens' basic rights. Grr. The rabble should not be allowed to decide on innocent people's legal protections.

As for music, you and I have similar tastes. I liked Suzanne Vega and Siouxsie and the Banshees in high school.

It's true, but CA has been doing it for a long time now. It's just a different group got bit this week.

Yeah, that's them.

My copy's a bootleg - I think it's a second generation copy based upon the signal degredation. I'm pretty sure that they were all bootlegs given that there are commercials between some of the videos for MTV and Top of the Pops.

Fantastic play list and much of the sound track to my life at University. My coping strategy was to through my self in to the music scene. I DJed both the rock society and was Arts and Ents on our college's JCR committee. This meant I would also be DJing once at week for the college dance night. Your playlist was just the kind of thing I would play.

I saw Siouxsie Sioux perform at Manchester Uni earlier this year. At 50 she can still move and kick those legs. She played new stuff and some of the old Banshees stuff like Israel, Spellbound, Dear Prudence and so on.

The Sisters are a Leeds band (my home town). Their track Floorshow is about watching the (in)famous Sunday Club at the Leeds Club Bar Phono né La Phonographique. The club closed a couple of years ago. It had a pillar in the middle of the dance floor which spawned the gothic two step since that's the only way you could dance there. The Sunday Club became Black Sheep which still runs. When Bar Phono closed its door a bunch of us bought a club in the same building and it is now held there. The Subculture now carries the torch of goth in Leeds. I have some friends who are old enough to have known Eldritch back then. He was a bit of an arse to be honest.

I have a number of friends who like these artists, or these tracks; I only have a few tracks, but I like them. Perhaps I should be following up on the rest...
