So, Aug 1-3, I'm going to be up in Eugene, OR for Faerieworlds 2008, and then next week, from 08/08/08 to Aug 10 I'll be in Las Vegas, NV for DEFCON 16, I think I'm going to skip Black-Hat this year, cause I'm just not getting enough out of it for the price. (The next time I go, I'll probably be presenting my research.)
And then… Aug 25-Sep 1 is Burning Man!

Back in June, a button got pressed somewhere, and I started to obsess over Burning Man; I was having dreams every night about it for several days in a row. This year I plan on taking it easy, and not building anything big, and not camping with a theme camp, and basically not doing any physical labor, or having any great responsibilities. I'm thinking that my contribution to Burning Man this year will be documenting it through photography.

Stuff to bring:
  • Food that doesn't require cooking, and 35 Gal. of water
  • Fur coats, furry boots, and brightly colored clothes that I'll never be able to use for anything else again.
  • Bicycle(s) and parts.
  • Camera gear.
  • Goggles and dust masks. (Sunscreen, Lip gloss, garbage bags, etc.)
  • Bright blinking flashing glowing things.
Ok, so, what am I forgetting? I'm deliberately not going to bring a tent this year, as every single year I set one up — and then never sleep in it.

I'm considering rigging up some kind of plastic covers for my cameras (mostly the lenses), so that they don't get completely impregnated with dust. (If you saw my old D200 you know what I mean.) The D300 body is dust and water-proof, but my 50mm f/1.4 lens isn't — It started making crunching noises when autofocusing by about Wednesday of burn. I saw another photographer on the playa a year or two ago, who had their camera inside a plastic shower cap, with rubber bands around the lens and stuff. The only part exposed was the objective surface of the lens. I might do that.

Don't forget oil (cooking spray is what I used last year) for the moving geary-chainish parts of your bike. Lifesaver last year.

I keep debating if I'm going or not. If I have the money.... or not....

sleeping stuff.... hammock... shade thing.... better to be safer than sorry... i'm all about some independence meself.

I was really glad to have camping wipe washcloth things I got from an REI type place. No shower all week, but stayed clean as a whistle... 'til I went outside of course :-)

Good shoes, lotion... Hair ties. Carrots.

Camera idea sounds good.

XOXOXOXO
Adj.

WRT lens covers -- I've seen people glue a plastic bag to the edge of a UV filter, and that seemed to work pretty well.

I would love to bring a good camera, but I'm afraid of ruining my baby. (Canon 350D, definitely not sealed, and $900 in prime lenses f/1.8 and faster, also not sealed.)

Gah. Every year, more of my friends talk about Burning Man and get me just a bit more interested each time. Would I even survive it?

Have a blast for me, and I can't wait to see the photos!

... I wonder if I shouldn't go to Faerie worlds...

Also, Stacey was talking about going up to visit her mum again soon.
Were you planning to drive? Maybe we might work something out where she drops us off and goes to visit her mum?

I need to think about it tho. I'm in meetings right now. Poke me later. 'kay?

Oh. Also, have you considered a one of the box type things they use for diving?

Hmm. Or I have a sort of weird idea.
If you buy the cheapest filter you can find for your camera, I can add a mounting surface to the outside of it. Then we could use some cheap plastic bags and put a fitting on them so they snap onto that filter. Then just tie it closed under the camera. Be thin enough you could use the buttons and see the screen et al through the plastic and cheap/easy to replace if your tore one or something.

Okay. So here's a real quick diagram:

Basically I'd just make a plate that attaches to the filter ring. Through that on the camera, put the baggie over it, snap down the lock plate, and then cut out the lens hole for the camera. I would probably make multiple copies of the lock plate. Chose to put the pegs on that because it's cheaper and more easily replaced than the part that needs to screw directly onto the camera.

I'm sorry for the cancellation; it's not at all what we wanted. There were some extenuating circumstances beyond our control that came up, and we made our decision after weighing our options.

We're incredibly looking forward to going ourselves, just bought our ticket today.

Honestly we have no idea what we're doing yet but I figure we have a lot of people to talk to, including you. We'll see you this weekend, and very much next (at faerieworlds). Either way, very much looking forward to it. Our first time is likely to be incredible.

As for what we'll contribute, we're not sure yet...aside from of course simply that we are having a major first there (and there is a lot of energy associated with first events), but I'm sure we'll find ways to contribute a lot more than that...we're thinking about it a lot during the time leading in and want to talk to everyone about it.

Some day we'll start going to tech cons again, its been a while since the last time we hit anything (didn't do too much but we hit UDS a couple times, etc.)

Damn you making me all nostalgic for the playa again! ;-) That and [livejournal.com profile] veleda's big mirrordome. Call it third-timer syndrome perhaps, but next time I get out there on the playa I definitely want to do the same - less responsibilities, more experiential immersion, without the need to fit in with other people in terms of deciding what events to see. Last year I missed so many events because I elected to stay up late nights and then sleep until after the best events started, or I went playa wandering when I really should have gone looking for activities that I knew I could participate in. Isn't that always the dilemma? When to enjoy the company of the group VS when to strike out on your own.

I know you'll probably enjoy this year more. Just take lots of photos so [livejournal.com profile] espiritkat and I can look at all the glowy lights and get all envious <3

Well, hopefully not the exact same situation--we're waiting to see if the leasing agency boots us, too. But there are alot of other things going on, and not being able to go out this weekend didn't help my mood at all *sigh*

I found you!!!!
I envy your itinerary! Sounds like mine last summer, except it was Comic-Con, LoJ, FW, Renfaire(s), Tahoe, move from L.A. to Mendocino Coast...
This year we're freakin' broke from the move so could only swing FW.
Have fun at Con and especially at BM!! I wish I could be there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sarah is begging me to be able to go to Burning Man. The problem is that I/we have an all-day meeting at Yahoo in San Jose on August 28th, that can't be moved. To catch the rest of Burning Man I'd have be able to get there from San Jose or Reno on the 29th -- and I can't drive. So,

- do you have any idea how to do that? (We're not asking you to pick us up -- that would be a 6-hour round-trip drive between Burning Man and Reno.)
- if we somehow managed to get ourself [*] there, could we meet up with you all and come back from Burning Man with you?

[*] Arrgh, pronouns are confusing right now.

OK, I/we can get from San Jose to Burning Man by ride-sharing.

There is also the option to go with you to Burning Man, then back to San Jose for the 28th, and then back to Burning Man. Or maybe we're completely crazy thinking that is possible without being too tired for the meeting [*]. What do you think?

[*] which is about secure subsets of JavaScript, of all things. Should be an interesting contrast :-)

And Burning Man generally doesn't allow in-and-outs.

Doesn't allow as in "considered a strong no-no"? We don't mind about the fee.

If you're going to a meeting, from the playa, you're definitely going to need a shower.

Yes, we were thinking of checking into a hotel in San Jose on the night of the 27th.

The last time it was just Nyah and I in my car, we had mostly filled the backseat, and completely filled the trunk.

That sounds as though you may not have room for me/us if you're also taking Tymestl. But if you decide that you do have room, what time are you going through, say, Reno?

If we were flying to Reno, we could only get there at about 9pm on the 24th. Or to Sacramento, 5:30 pm on the 24th. To book the flight we'd also need to know approximately what time we were getting back to the same airport after BM.

Now that there is even the possibility of going to Burning Man (especially if it's with you and Nyah), we're really, really psyched up about it.

I'm only getting into Reno at 11:40 pm on the 24th. I have a ticket for the BioTour bus, so there's no problem. A ride would be helpful on the way back, though.

Is the number I had for you a mobile number?
