So, I have a few moments of spare time to read my friends list. And like almost every single post is a LJ-cut saying: "You are about to view content that may not be appropriate for minors." (Which, if you actually read the post; It is appropriate for minors. THE LJ-CUT IS A LIE!) But anyway, this makes having a 'friends page' — a single page where you can read everyone's stuff at once — completely useless. I can't just skip down the page, but have to click and open a hundred tabs, and there's no way I can feasibly do this on my cell phone. If I only have 15 minutes a day to read LJ, most of that time is now sunk into loading individual pages. I can't just click on one link, and then read the results, and then get back to my life.

I generally don't even have time to reply to comments in my own journal, let alone read other people's journals, and it's now ten times harder.

Skimming over my friends page, these are some of the journals with the filthy-lying-lj-cuts on every post — even the private locked ones:

UPDATE: I think that Livejournal has now reached the pinnacle of emo, in that it's now automatically cutting itself.

Holy crap. It's because I put the word "Fuck" in one of my posts, and lj doesn't want children burning their tender little eyes on such a filthy word.

I'm sorry.

[identity profile] dv-girl.livejournal.com 2007-12-03 09:44 am (UTC)(link)
That's fucking weird. I say fuck all the fucking time and they haven't fucking fucked with my fucking fuckage of the f-word yet.

PS. I really <3 that costume. :)

Yes.
Though some people are voluntarily tagging their own journals as "adult only". But that should only give you an "are you over 14" page before you actually sign in with your username and password.

I actually have not run across the "not safe for anyone" links that foxgrrl is talking about, as long as I'm signed in, but that may change as LJ sees fit.

Yeah. We have to protect the children from bad words and stuff, otherwise they might become corrupt, like we did when we were growing up. Oh noes!

But yeah, if you go to the settings and select "don't collapse" as an option, you shouldn't get the annoying unreadable posts.

Done. How do you say fuck in russian? Google's language tools are being unhelpful.

[identity profile] veleda.livejournal.com 2007-12-02 06:22 pm (UTC)(link)
if you go to settings you can turn the 'filtering' off and not have to worry about this at all.

LJ has a new feature to make the world safer for children. [livejournal.com profile] the_lj_herald has been trying to keep up with the clarifications after the original post was made in [livejournal.com profile] lj_biz.

[livejournal.com profile] the_lj_herald is a good (unofficial) way to keep up with the latest LJ changes.

[identity profile] chirik.livejournal.com 2007-12-02 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
6A did it again.

You can turn the filtering off by going to the settings page.

That doesn't change that they managed to annoy a whole bunch of people.

And you have to set a birthdate. I set mine to be Amelia Earhart's birthday. Otherwise it won't let you set anything. Fucking annoying is what.

[identity profile] girlvinyl.livejournal.com 2007-12-02 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks. Appreciate the link.

[identity profile] anaisdjuna.livejournal.com 2007-12-02 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
I just checked. Mine was not automatically borked by El J. (thanks for the settings link Chirik! :-)

[identity profile] harlkyn.livejournal.com 2007-12-02 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, when LJ added this feature, they turned on "safe search" as default for every single journal. You have to turn it back to "no filtering".

[personal profile] solarbird 2007-12-02 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
Not just "safe search." You also have to set the setting above that ("Collapse adult-oriented material written by other users:") to "Do not collapse."

[identity profile] harlkyn.livejournal.com 2007-12-02 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
Oops, yeah...that too :) Thanks :)

[identity profile] anaisdjuna.livejournal.com 2007-12-02 03:18 am (UTC)(link)

Really? I thought one had to turn it on. Click the flag-a-ma-jig. Perhaps it's different for different LJ styles? I think I got a note to that effect. I didn't turn anything on or off & I'm not on her coal for Christmas list there... So she's either not reading my el j, or it's on for me which I don't think it is or I'd have heard about it especially after I bitched in my own El J about this new deal or one must take action to enact it.

Curious.

Good! I fully intend to corrupt anyone I can get my lewd little pixels on!

;-)

[identity profile] anaisdjuna.livejournal.com 2007-12-02 03:15 am (UTC)(link)

I think the LJ Minor Cut thing is hella dorky myself. Maaaaybe for a couple of people I'll click the thingie, but mostly No. Me no clicky.

Hee hee... an' didn't cha just call 'em all out too! HA HA HA! :-)

I like a woman with a lil fire to her. Meow! ;-)

Hmmm... ALL of my posts are tagged "may be inappropriate for children?" (I made one and tagged it "explicit," just to check the settings.)

You should be able to go to your viewing options page and turn off the "filters" and "collapse entries" options. When they inflicted the new features on everyone, they decided that *everyone* wanted "moderate filters" on their LJ activity.
ext_3407: squiggly symbol floating over water (Default)

[identity profile] hummingwolf.livejournal.com 2007-12-02 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
Go here. Go down to the bottom of the page where it says "Adult content options." I don't know what you want to set your "adult content" level to, but for "Viewing adult content" you want to change to "Do not collapse." And for "Safe search filtering" you want to pick the "Do not filter my results" option. If you cannot select the options you want, it is probably because LJ's servers do not know you are over 18. If this is a problem, do go to this page and pick a birthdate that will convince LJ you are over 18.

This brand-new "feature" is annoying many, many people right now.

[identity profile] drewkitty.livejournal.com 2007-12-02 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for letting me know about this. Last straw; I'm still reading posts on LJ but I'm moving my posts to Blogger and syndicating via the feed 'gdrewkitty'

I suggest that others do the same :)

Actually Cuts don't bother me much anymore.
I found a nice Firefox plugin for LJ:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4536

The best features are the fact that you can unfold cuts without leaving the friends page, and you can restrict the size of images, so your friends page doesn't go extra wide.

"UPDATE: I think that Livejournal has now reached the pinnacle of emo, in that it's now automatically cutting itself."

HA HA HA! That is hilarious!

Livejournal should really consider therapy. Cutting yourself is just a desperate cry for attention.

Try setting an arbitrary age. Make yourself a couple hundred years old. That should fix it and piss them off too. :)

Or be subtle. Give your real age in octal. Then, should they ever hassle you about it, you've been honest and given the correct number and screwed up their demographic data at the same time. :)

I think that Six Apart has monthly contests where employees try to figure out how to maximally piss off their userbase.

filtering

[identity profile] gaelfling.livejournal.com 2007-12-02 01:46 pm (UTC)(link)
sorry, I set my journal to 'adult concepts' :/
it's just because I know for a fact I have a -0 tag on my mental filter, and tend to say what is on my mind- which often is content that thinking beings can understand
didn't want the witch hunt to filter me for me, so it was preemptive :0
sorry it's caused you trouble, wasn't my intent :/

[identity profile] kitten-goddess.livejournal.com 2007-12-02 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Just checked my LJ. None of my posts are flagged, and I thought they would be, because I swear on my LJ. I am not worried, because there are no kids on my friends list, and no one but my friends list reads my LJ, AFAIK.

[identity profile] aaron-raccoon.livejournal.com 2007-12-03 06:54 am (UTC)(link)
I mostly set it as a CYA thing, and no, I don't really want kids reading my LJ. I'd be happier of LJ didn't add this requirement, but they did. It's going to be interesting what happens since LJ was just sold to a Russian company.
